Crush on Maurice Sendak

Today, the great children's author, Maurice Sendak died. I think of him often and marvel at the way he weaves words. I love to listen to him story tell even more. What a fabulous teller of tales. No Ums or Errs or stumbles through thought. He always delivers a refreshingly solid and raw opinion that makes me think. Think and smile.

Mr. Sendak,  may the afterlife be gentle and funny {just in case}.

Tune in to NPR to hear the amazing Terry Gross interview and pay tribute to Maurice Sendak.

These are a sample of our "Where the Wild Things Are" photos. Sendak's writings keep making their way into our images.

According to Marz, she was "having a very bad day" curled up on the front porch and sad.
As she always does, she found something to make herself laugh...
Her castle, her cat, her kingdom...

Crush on I Heart Faces { Hey Girl }

The May photo challenge at I Heart Faces is honoring mothers, women, daughters. I chose this photograph of our Ruby--so royal and majestic in her expression. She sits with confidence reigning over her magical kingdom. At the mere age of seven, she possesses an understanding well beyond her years. She is gentle, delicate, thoughtful and loving--everything a future mother reigning over her kingdom must be.

Crush on the Little Things

Today was a day filled with the little things--the ones that count. I have mentored photography students over the past ten years but it has been ten years since I have been in front of class talking about photography to a group of eager twelve year olds. Today, they started to hand me their first assignments. I pulled out the black butcher paper, hung it on the main street inside our school, and posted a "coming soon" sign.
Today, I was lugging my gear out of the hot car when the phone rang. I didn't recognize the number and considered answering later when I wasn't loaded down. I'm glad I didn't. The call was from the mother of one of my clients. She called to simply share her appreciation of the experience and for the photographs of her daughter. She talked about how my portfolio captures the individual. "The art & individuality of you" has been my motto, slogan, philosophy from the beginning and to hear her express this to me, not my voicemail, was golden.
When I hung up I gathered the many boxes from the front porch. I receive a lot of boxes of prints and products for my clients. One of them, however, was addressed to me from one of my most favorite stores and places of aesthetic inspiration, Anthropologie.  I went to tear into it and as usual, felt I needed to photograph it. This was special.

Today, I feel like my insides are smiling.

Crush on Good Mornings and Great People

You may remember our last Facebook Fan Photo Contest. The theme was {SOUL} and Allison Anderson won with her camera phone image of her husband and new daughter.
I didn't know that Cole, the cozied up Daddy, was in the military and wouldn't be experiencing many mornings like this with his daughter. It makes Allison's winning, all the more perfect. Cole is currently deployed and his girls, big and small, anxiously await his return from Afghanistan.
We met in a small grassy park along the Truckee River. This is what we captured:
Baby Grace with Daddy's dog tags.
Mama and the Flying Grace
Time to focus on Allison, the Mom, the Wife. This is the face of America's service people who stay at home, guarding their families and hearts while their loved ones are away. It's such an honor to be in the company of such strong women.

Despite all of our clowning shenanigans, Little Grace is too sophisticated for our goofball-ness.
Who's the lady in the pretty pink coat on reflector duty? That's Joanna of Daily Blessings Photography. She, too, won in our contest. She got to join us for our girl party in the park for a "fly-on-the-wall" mentor session. She won with her image to the left.

The mentorship winner, Joanna Daily looking prettier than spring itself.
The beautiful light of Verdi. May today introduce you to new friends.
