Crush on Mr Brown's Baby | Newborn Photographer Reno

What a wonderful day. My friend, who is now a Mimi (a young, southern grandma) celebrated the birth of her first grandchild. Her son/my godson come by with his lovely lady and newborn daughter, Braylinn. A magical moment witnessing him as a father and fiancé.
I do believe I heard him mutter something about "things just aren't the same as way back then." Kids make us sound older overnight.

Wedding at Historic Nevada Site | Priscilla + Tyler

We got to spend the afternoon with a wonderful family celebrating the marriage of Priscilla and Tyler at a very special location. Long time native Nevadans know of Marilyn's Pond and the fish hatchery. Many families have spent a summer day picnicking, fishing for trout, and hiking amongst the pine trees.   The bride's family have shared many a memory, and now, a wedding. Enjoy their visual love story...

Crush on Roasted Savory Pumpkin Seeds

Finding the best crunchable, munchable snacks that won't be the end to my already curvaceous waistline has become stop short of a hobby. The latest is roasted savory and spicy pumpkin seeds. I've made them with and without the shells, straight from the pumpkin and straight from the bulk bins at the local grocery store. Both are delicious!

shelled, raw, uncooked seeds tossed in seasoning and oil

• Preheat oven to 300 degrees
• Scrape the seeds out of a pumpkin with as little of the pumpkin strands attached as possible. If you buy raw pumpkin seeds expect to pay anywhere between $4-$7 a pound. I've found them at all groceries stores that have a bulk DIY bin section. Try roasting one or two pounds at a time. 
• In a mixing bowl combine the following ingredients: olive oil (enough to just coat the seeds but don't drown them), salt, garlic powder, and cayenne. Careful with the cayenne. I love the kick but a little goes a long way. 
• Spread single layer onto a cookie sheet
• Cook for 45 minutes on 300 degrees
• Munch Time!

Crush on Maurice Sendak

Today, the great children's author, Maurice Sendak died. I think of him often and marvel at the way he weaves words. I love to listen to him story tell even more. What a fabulous teller of tales. No Ums or Errs or stumbles through thought. He always delivers a refreshingly solid and raw opinion that makes me think. Think and smile. 


Mr. Sendak,  may the afterlife be gentle and funny {just in case}.

Crush on the Little Things

Today was a day filled with the little things--the ones that count. I have mentored photography students over the past ten years but it has been ten years since I have been in front of class talking about photography to a group of eager twelve year olds. Today, they started to hand me their first assignments. I pulled out the black butcher paper, hung it on the main street inside our school, and posted a "coming soon" sign. 
Today, I was lugging my gear out of the hot car when the phone rang. I didn't recognize the number and considered answering later when I wasn't loaded down. I'm glad I didn't. The call was from the mother of one of my clients. She called to simply share her appreciation of the experience and for the photographs of her daughter. She talked about how my portfolio captures the individual. "The art & individuality of you" has been my motto, slogan, philosophy from the beginning and to hear her express this to me, not my voicemail, was golden. 
When I hung up I gathered the many boxes from the front porch. I receive a lot of boxes of prints and products for my clients. One of them, however, was addressed to me from one of my most favorite stores and places of aesthetic inspiration, Anthropologie.  I went to tear into it and as usual, felt I needed to photograph it. This was special. 


Today, I feel like my insides are smiling.

The high school seniors are finishing up the last few weeks of their K-12 education and standing at the fork in the road. College? Job? Both? Trip? What did you do?

Where are we headed?

Alec | Reno High School | Reno, Nevada from the fastest senior session in history! 10-15 minutes!

I graduated a semester early from high school. My last day was a Friday and I started college that Monday. Got an apartment over the weekend and headed up the hill for wisdom early Monday morning. I learned that I liked having my own apartment. A lot. My first semester in college didn't fare that well due to that freedom space of an apartment. So, I packed the VW as full as I could and took off to San Diego. 


My bestie was already there and could hold my hand in my first big move away from home.

From there, the travel bug bit and I ended up in Mexico, Seattle back to Reno to get that degree I had started. 3 years later, off to England, Greece, and Scotland. Home bound to sell my belongings in yard sale that would leave me with two filled suitcases. I still miss that 300+ collection of lady musician cds that sold for $3 each. The car and brand new Mac that sold from the lawn--paid for lots of adventures in Scotland. I returned to the motherland again and began my career as a freelance photographer and received my masters degree. If history repeats itself, it seems I am due a move and a degree.
