Crush on Reno Class of 2011 Portraits

It's official. High school seniors are rowdy, cool, talented, and just plain fun to photograph. I love their ability to "dress the part" and model with reckless abandon. We get so caught up that Richelle locked her keys in her car (which turned out to give us time to capture the one of her in the grass) and then my keys mysteriously disappeared during Jun's shoot (Richelle assisted) AND they almost ran away with elves today. It's time for a key chain---around my neck.

And we always find time to goof around
You may remember Jun from a previous post. Go check his out here:

Last Days for {LOVE} Contest

We have received some heart thumping, soul mated {LOVE} stories for our {LOVE} Contest. If you haven't had a chance to get it to us, you still have 'til tomorrow at midnight. Send us a short, short story, a love letter,  or a simple moment that frequents your thoughts.

Phenomenal Woman by Maya AngelouPretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

A {LOVE} Letter to You

Dearest,
You stir me. Through this half-inch square box, I have come to know you; each wrinkle, your scar, that chipped tooth from when you fell on the Radio Flyer Wagon. You are perfect. At this moment, I feel perfect too. I am going to put you around my neck in a little locket; a medal I made of you.
Love.

Dear Lovebird

Dear Lovebird,

I am so sorry to hear the tragic news. I want to retell your story. I'm quite fascinated as to why you chose that perch in Malawi Alley to wait for your mate. You found your special Agapornis, Lilian. A beautiful name Lilian. Why are the poachers poisoning the lovebirds?

Signed,
Eilean a' Cheó

GrassRoots - The Story - Part II

I had to make a timeline for a college education class--Social Studies: Lesson Plan:  How to Make a Timeline. Materials list = white butcher paper, pencil, markers, images (drawn, decopaged, or stolen from the internet). Objective = to chronologically account one's life over a timeline of historical events.
The class displayed their masterpieces, their lives of mini milestones dotted by pink highlighters and star stickers. I learned of their births, their first cars, marriage, and babies. I knew nothing more about them after this project than I did before. I was told by a classmate later that night that the teacher thought I "wasn't cut out for teaching". My timeline did not begin on my birthday. It began with one of the most powerful photographs I have come to know in our family's collection; Vietnam, 1970, there was my Dad with a gun pointing to his temple while holding a portrait of my Mom and brother. This was my beginning.

GrassRoots ~ the story ~ Part I

Food saved my marriage. I even considered divorce.  What had once given me freedom was beginning to feel like a noose and it was getting tight, real tight.

And then I found it. A subject I admire; one I want to understand more deeply, respect fully. It started by happenstance. We had been chucking our lawn clippings from the summer and the leaves from the fall into a pile, too lazy to actually bag them and haul them to the curb. A few years of this practice and we finally decided to clean up our backyard. We discovered rich, beautiful soil colonized by the most magnificent Red Wrigglers. It smelled of the pinot I had fallen so madly in love with before I was married. It had the scent of life, the scent of living. We madly pierced the earth with our pitch forks and laid the soil to rest in our newly constructed garden beds. We felt proud. We shopped for seeds.

There is no chronology, no linear order of events to this story. As far as I can remember, moments have spiraled in and out and back again like the Blue Angel I watched as a child tumble through the sky.

to be continued...

Sun Ray Crush

Some of my fondest memories are not of moments but rather how light sets the scene. It is the main player in the room and all else falls into rank. This series of sultry, sexy shots are a testament to light's command. Rays, I have a crush on you.
